addressing was so simple in 1906, & postage so little.

Writing regularly to several people—a parent, a friend who’s moved to another coast, a daughter or son away at college—requires one to keep separate mental ledgers, storing up the weather or the idle thoughts or the disasters we need to pass on. We’re always getting ready to write. The letters out and back become a correspondence, and mysteriously take on a tone of their own: some rambly and comfortably boring; others cool and funny; some financial; some confessional. They stick in the mind and seem worth the trouble.

–from “Life and Letters” by Roger Angell for The New Yorker

two years ago (two years already?) i shared with you all the letter-writing regimen of my grade school years. this structured routine included quite detailed record keeping, & with the fairly frequent correspondence of late, i’ve been wanting to design the very notebook i would have torn right through as a 12-year-old.
& so i present… the letter ledger. as equally alliterative & sized as the perpetual planner.
it’s a limited quantity experiment for the time being. i’m intensely curious to see if there is anyone else out there who is as meticulous as my 5th grade self. kindly (i said kindly) let me know if that person is you (or someone you know).

the second collaborative calendar of le petit elefant + paper & type is now available for peeking, posting, purchasing, presenting!
2012 is inspired by the thoughtfulness and charm of sending (and receiving!) correspondence and packages by post (& then some). as with our previous collaboration, this calendar features artwork to keep &/or share – simply tear at the perforated line (see photo below). it’s now available at the shop.
on that note, paper & type will be present at a few fairs this holiday. come visit! i’d love to meet & talk paper with you (topics of your choice are welcome too, of course)…

have a peek at this charming compendium of culinary correspondence! it’s such a heartwarming (& graphically darling) project by jane koo. the rest of her portfolio reveals other equally joyful work as well. (many thanks to knic for sharing this with me).
on that note, this week is the first of 52 weeks of mail. my alternate title of the project would be “52 weeks of making someone’s mail day.” might that convince you to take part?
have a lovely weekend!

might you be in los angeles? come by for an evening (march 15, 7–9pm, to be precise) to share & catch up with your correspondence, & to craft letter-sized goodies to send to your pen pal(s).
wherever you happen to be, should you be interested in having a pen pal, do email rollcall@reformschoolrules.com with your details (name, address, interests…). a list of pen pals to be matched awaits.
