made by hand.part II
…
this dress pictured here is by miss jill aiko yee. i appreciate the big blooms & the dress’s structure & functionality, but most of all whenever i wear it i feel happy knowing that it was a piece handmade by jill herself.
for her second collection, she devised a line of practical, pocket-filled pieces. my favorite, of course, is the series of apron dresses. think dvf’s famous wrap dress, but with a dual apron twist plus four (4) pockets. the apron dress may either be tied at back for two (2) handy-sized pockets, or tied at front to reveal two (2) generous-sized ones. the twirl factor of this dress is pretty great as well (often-times this is a very important factor in my dress decision-making).
the rest of her collection may be viewed here, & the bits that inspire her there.
now that you’ve moved into the new studio, i’m expecting high levels of productivity, jill <3

i love that the back is a v, as well. hello!

    made by hand.part I of __ (many, i’m sure)
…
even at a time when i’m doing my best to clear & keep things to a minimum, there are a few things that i love to make exceptions for. one such exception is the bento pictured above, by the very dear satsuki shibuya.
this piece is from satsuki’s first collection, which was released last year under her previous moniker zakka nouveau. it falls under the exceptional category of “beautifully designed, carefully crafted, & adds joy to the quality of life.” the palette of this particular collection featured grays & pinks & clouds & raindrops. the material is sturdy & soft, the stitching so very careful & clean. i felt excitement about the bento as a kid would when choosing her school lunchbox, & i was better about bringing my lunch to work, just so i could carry it from house to car, & car to office, & sometimes office to plaza.
if you haven’t yet gotten to see & experience these home goods (or to meet satsuki, for that matter), you’ll get to soon: she’ll be in a show december 4th in culver city, presenting her third collection, for fall/winter. i can’t wait to see it myself. more details about the show here. in the meanwhile, do have a look around her beautiful shop.
it’s been wonder-filled, following along with satsuki’s work! every bit of it is a genuine reflection of her kind & thoughtful being.

    studio of hearts.

    …

these sweet, handmade-with-love business cards belong to my dear friend melissa mcmeekin.

i enjoy (quite a bit) seeing cards that are perfectly befitting of their owner. melissa carved these hearts & designed the rubber info stamp for this array of patterned cards that represent her & her venture. i’ve been learning bit by bit about studio of hearts via handwritten letters (mostly), & it was so nice to see when she revealed these at last. cards, though pretty diminutive, hold such an incredible amount of punch in making an endeavor all the more real, wouldn’t you agree?

mm, i’m still waiting for you to mail me one, please!

(all photos belong to studio of hearts).
